WORD SALADS - A Collaborative Project

Mandana MacPherson and Marie-Claude Giroux

Art interactives for gallery exhibitions, retreats, workshops, or other participatory events

In a community setting we provide materials—colored and painted papers, bowls, and cutting and marking implements—in order to begin the additive process of crafting the salad. The amount and format of these initial materials are dependent on the setting and the length of time determined for the salad preparation activity. Those involved can also contribute to the creation of the blank materials on which the words will be written. Sometimes we deploy collection boxes with pencils and slips of paper in the advance of a “salad” event. In workshop/retreat settings, participants can begin this salad preparation and addition of words soon after arrival and throughout the retreat, culminating in a final poetic feast. We deploy collection boxes with pencils and slips of paper in some situations in the advance of a “salad” event.

For gallery installations we generally prepare the salad ourselves as our own collaborative art piece, and then invite visitors to interact by serving themselves. We utilize a wide variety of bowls, serving implements, trays, materials, and themes for our work.

for self reflection, community building and poetic word play

Words and phrases are collected through workshops, collection boxes and other means. These “ingredients” are then transferred to various colored papers and artfully crumpled, torn, and furled to create the “salad” in a chosen vessel. Participants serve themselves a small bowl, unfurl the leafy papers, place them on the provided composing surface, and arrange them into a phrase, sentence or poem. These tossed together, seemingly random, often poignant, entertaining and poetic representations offer unique community portraits and are documented for inclusion in project archives.

Human communication isn’t simply about passing on information. It is an exchange of understanding. And if we are lucky and attentive enough, communication can become a system for the transfer of delight, tenderness, and insight within a community.
